Pl@ntNet is an application that offers the convenience of plant identification through smartphone photography. This tool is especially beneficial when expert botanists are not readily accessible.
Furthermore, Pl@ntNet serves as an exceptional citizen science initiative. By contributing to Pl@ntNet, users' plant photographs are collected and analyzed by scientists worldwide. This collaborative effort aims to enhance our understanding of plant biodiversity and develop more effective preservation methods.
When using Pl@ntNet, users can identify a diverse range of plant species found in natural environments, including flowering plants, trees, grasses, conifers, ferns, vines, wild salads, and cacti, among others.
While Pl@ntNet also allows identification of cultivated plants in parks and gardens, its primary focus lies in cataloging wild plants. These encompass plants present in natural habitats, as well as those growing alongside sidewalks in cities or within home vegetable gardens.
The accuracy of Pl@ntNet's identification process is greatly enhanced when comprehensive visual information is provided. Some plant species closely resemble each other when observed from a distance, making minute details crucial in distinguishing between them.
Flowers, fruits, and leaves represent the most distinctive features of a species and should thus be given priority when photographing. However, other details such as thorns, buds, or stem hair can also prove instrumental. While a full plant photograph provides valuable information, it may not always suffice for reliable identification.
At present, Pl@ntNet can recognize approximately 20,000 species. Although this figure falls short of the 360,000 known plant species on Earth, Pl@ntNet continually expands its database through contributions from experienced users like yourself.
Feel empowered to contribute your own observations! Each contribution undergoes community review and may ultimately be included in the application's species photo gallery.
The January 2019 release of Pl@ntNet boasts several improvements and new features, including:
- The ability to filter recognized species by genus or family.
- A revised data validation system that prioritizes the input of skilled users, based on factors such as the number of observed species validated by the community.
- The re-identification of shared observations, whether submitted by you or other application users.
- Multi-flora identification, enabling searches within the entire application database rather than limiting to a single selected flora. This feature proves invaluable when encounter uncertainty regarding which flora to explore.
- The option to select and access favorite floras more efficiently.
- Navigation through image galleries at different taxonomic levels.
- Mapping functionality to track your observations.
- Links to numerous informative fact sheets.
